Well the cat is officially out of the bag… Back in May we took a road trip down to deepest Dorset to submit a few of our products to be judged in the 2020 Great Taste Awards. Which then turned out to necessitate a secret trip last week to The Guild of Fine Food HQ in London. We can now proudly announce that we won a 3 STAR AWARD for our Droitwich Salted Caramel!
Out of 12,777 entrants worldwide only 204 products won 3 stars so understandably we are absolutely over the moon!
We have been making the caramel for a while now as it is the main ingredient in our legendary Crackjack – Droitwich Salted Caramel Flapjack. The idea of putting the caramel into jars however, is one we owe to Caroline and Kirsten at Churchfields Saltworks (who since 2017 have had exclusive rights to extracting the historic brine from the Tower Hill Pump in the centre of Droitwich Spa.) They tried the Crackjack, loved it and asked if we would be interested in collaborating with them by putting the caramel into jars. That’s exactly what we did and after a spot of local radio coverage we launched the product at the 2019 Droitwich Food Festival where it sold over 100 jars…
We think it is the perfect addition to many favourite sweet treats including cakes, pancakes, waffles and ice cream. Once opened it will keep for up to 4 weeks in the fridge (well in theory anyway as once tasted it probably won’t last that long!!…)
The Guild of Fine Foods judges wrote:
“Glorious nose-filling aroma of salted caramel. Thick and smooth, creamy and salty – so perfectly pitched. The caramel is perfect, the cream comes through and the salt is exactly the right amount to take the edge off the sweetness. An utterly divine mouthful. Spot on – delicious, glamorous – a winner.”
And:
“Great colour and gorgeous caramel on the nose. Thick, dense, almost soft toffee in texture and in the mouth – well, the smile on the judges’ faces said it all. The balance of the caramel and the salt is perfectly pitched without any cloying sickly sweetness. The clear caramel notes are a true delight and the measure of the salt is just perfect. Absolutely no need to tamper with this recipe – it’s spot on.”
We just couldn’t have asked for better feedback than that!
